yeah i play trombone- started in 4th grade and i'm a junior in high school now. but the lessons do help the most, i must agree. i'm also taking a beginning strings class right now. we learn to play violin, viola, cello, and bass all in a semester unfortunately. i'm on my last one, cello right now. but my favorite so far has to be the bass. it rocks! do you mind me asking why you want to learn violin?

Heh... he kinda beat me to it, but yes...a recorder is a woodwind that actually ranges from tenor up to sopranino(i.e. piccolo level) and I play soprano. Mine, however, are made of wood not plastic Pear and Cherry to be exact.

Oh, and I've been playing recorder for 20 years and piano about 25 years.

I've always found it a pretty instrument and that it made lovely sound. I think I'd like to learn the chello too, but the size of it intimindates me, lol. I know you can get it in different sizes, but... I think I'll try the violin first. I remember as a teenager (which wasn't long ago lol) my mom asking if I could pick one instrument to play what would it be and I had a tie between a flute and a violin. So yeah...

    Re: Do you play....

I come from a really musical family but somehow the gene passed me right on by. I can't play a note to save my soul and my singing voice has been likened to a cat giving birth in a spinning dyer (and they were being kind!)

    Anyone wanna jam with me????

I am looking for someone in particular that plays violin. Can you give me an idea on the cost for a 'beginner' violin? Is there such thing as renting a musical instrument as well?
A good IRL friend of mine started playing the violin not too long ago. He took on a rental through a rent-to-own offer at a local music shop. Using a rent-to-own program is great for any instrument.

I play the harp (*points to avatar*), and when I started I rented for several months from a business that offered to apply a percentage of the rental fees to the cost of a purchase if you bought through them. It knocked several hundred dollars off my final bill when I bought! You should check around and see what offers are out there.

I also highly recommend finding a qualified teacher. There are technical aspects to playing an instrument that you will greatly benefit from learning through a professional. Also, having somebody to correct you is invaluable and with a good teacher will help you rapidly grasp and improve on the instrument.

Find a teacher that 'clicks' with you; ask if they offer introductory lessons. If you don't get a good feeling from the teacher (who may otherwise be wonderful, just not the right one for 'you') then try somebody else. Being able to have a strong rapport with your teacher is so important.

Teachers for violins are not usually uncommon, much like piano teachers, and so their prices tend to reflect that in being competitive - well, depending on how many are actually in your general area. Do your research on teachers in your area. Also, sign up for a Violin mailing group or message group - you can find lots of helpful hints from current players.

I hope this helps! Good luck on your journey to music.

I sing, and can play the Piano.

I tried the Flute, Trumpet, Violin, and Clarinet before I gave up and just sang.

    So I sing.

Yes, you can rent instruments, and at a store here, you can get a violin around $1200.

    Re: Do you play....

I play clarinet, piano, guitar, flute, trumpet, sax, bass clarinet and contra clarinet. Although the three clarinets are the only ones I can (or could) play more than just simple things. I haven't played anything in about 3-4 years now :'(
