Book Review - Verdi by Jannell Cannon

Just wanted to share my thoughts on this author and her books, specifically one I just read with my 6 year old son.

Verdi is the story of a young and bright yellow tree python who fears the change into a mature green. The story was fascinating for my son and I and her skills of illustration are beyond beautiful. She truly captures these gorgeous snakes. The lessons about growing up and changing are a great starting point to talk with our Michael about how everything grows up and changes in life.

Here's an interview Ms. Cannon did....

And a review of this book....

    She has also written...

Crickwing about a cochroach, Stellaluna about a bat and her newest one which we just finished reading (and completely loved!), Pinduli about a hyena. Each book is as beautifully illustrated by the author as is Verdi and each book has a wonderful life lesson for kids. I love how she's picked creatures that are not usually the choice of children's authors and made them so appealing. Definitely an author I intend to add to our home library and enjoy her books with my grandkids one day.

Thanks Jo, I will definately have to check out more of her books. My kids and I have Stellaluna, and we love it. My kids currently have been on an Eric Clarke kick right now (the author of The Hungry Little Caterpillar) some of his books have lights and sounds built in too and they think that is fascinating. But I think its time for some new books in our collection!! Thanks!!

My kids loved Verdi, too. Educational, cute, and great pics along with the great story. My husband enjoyed reading it to our 6 and 3 yr olds.

Yep and remember books like this make great birthday presents or suchlike from a favorite relative.

I haven't read Crickwing yet myself, Christie. That's the next one on my list. I'm not a big "bug" person but since I don't want to pass that fear on to Mikey I figure the best way might be through that book.

That is just wrong Tyree. I have the sudden urge to stomp that picture, but it would be hard to explain to the husband why I stomped my computer screen. Eww, eww, ewwww...

Pamela, do you mean Eric Carle? My kids are really into him right now, and in fact my 6 year old talks about him by name.

My kids also like Bill Martin Jr books like Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you See?

Jo, I do not want to pass on a fear of bugs to my kids either. It's funny too because I worked in an entomology lab for 2 years, but we dealt with cute caterpillars. I purposely pick up all sorts of bugs for them and once walked half a mile with a big old slimey worm in my hands. What we don't do for our kids....

You know, it is Carle... I even went to go and double check but I must have gotten side tracked earlier and forgot by the time I got back to the computer...LOL!! Thank you for correcting me!
I don't do very well remembering authors names unless they are Stephen King, Dean Koontz, or Nicholas Sparks!!

And you gotta love worms, my kids love to dig them up in the yard (I did pick up the first one and show them there is nothing to be afraid of with them, but worms I don't mind)!! I think I have already passed on my fears of spiders and wasps/bees to my kids though... But I suppose those aren't necessarily things you want to go picking up all the time anyway...

That's okay. I just wanted to make sure. I make those kinds of mistakes WAY too often. I'd blame it on old age, but I'm not really old enough to really use that excuse. I can blame it on the kids though, so I'll go with that.
