Mutt's all the way!!! My 15 year old shelter rescue dog Cirrus is the greatest dog who has ever owned me. The other day I was walking him and a woman with an obviously very expensive dog asked me what kind of a dog Cirrus was. I said a shelter dog, the best kind. To which she replied "Oh, and why is that? And, without missing a beat I said, because they need our help. Must not have been the answer she was looking for because she didn't say another word.

I've noticed more of a designer run with small breed dogs. Anything small is automatically worth $$$$ to some people, and mix and mash breeds..tada.

The thing is labradoodles are not hypoallergenic as some people think. There are some people who come into the store on a regular basis with their goldendoodles. Cute, sweet dogs and HUGE but I had to stare in suprise at the 1200 price they paid for each one.

growing up i had a german sheppard/huskie mix... it was the nicest dog ever and looked pretty cool. the only thing wrong with it was that it had major disciplinary issues - it ate a 3ft tall gingerbread house one time even... she was free though and lived to be 13 so what more do you want.

Why? Why pay $600 for something you can find for free on any community message board, or pull from a shelter for a fraction of that price?

For that money, I would absolutely expect the breeder to have done full work-ups on the parents (and hopefully grandparents)...including x-rays of joints, tests for hereditary disease, etc. Unfortunately, the backyard breeders and puppy mills aren't health-checking or pairing healthy dogs...I routinely see these poor little mutts with horrible luxating patellas, cryptorchidism (yes, it's hereditary), demodex, wicked skin allergies, thyroid conditions, atrocious dental deformities that require surgical correction, cherry-eye...

And the really sad part is that the consumers who buy the cute fluffballs are completely ignorant of the moneypit they are voluntarily buying for hundreds of dollars...at least, they dont find out until past the "48 hour health guarantee". And don't even get me started on dogs "registered" with the ACA....the ACA says they endorse breeder health-checks on dogs...I've read through their vet forms, and they don't even spell all of the medical terms correctly! Anybody spending money on these dogs should do their homework...the money you spend is an affirmation of your support of the breeder's ethics and practices. Know what it is that you are supporting with your money.

Re: Designer or mutt(aka mixed breed)

How about dogs registered with the CKC? Not the Canadian Kennel Club, the Continental Kennel Club. As per their website:

"Dogs over 6 months of age which have no previous Registration history may be registered by providing 2 witness signatures attesting to the purebred status of the dog along with 3 photos (front, left and right) of the dog to confirm it is ‘of proper breed type’ as defined by our current CKC Registration Rules and Regulations.Canine Registration Applications are available in PDF format from our web site."

So it only has to LOOK purebred. When I see anything posted that a dog is CKC registered, I tell people to run the other way!

LOL Yeah, that one is pretty funny too. They can also get a vet to visually inspect the animal and sign off that it appears to be of such and such breed.

And the owners who come in and proudly flourish their new puppy's registration....and I have to just cringe and bite my tongue. I feel so sorry for them, but more for the poor puppies.

You're better than me, I don't bite my tongue usually. Then again, I am not at work when I run into it. That would change things I guess. I do try to be calm and informative, not combative though.
