Re: Designer or mutt(aka mixed breed)

Even better are those that think their "designer" mutt is papered. Those are the ones I always write to and ask who the dog is registered with :-)

No matter what anyone thinks, if the dog in not an established breed (either AKC or UKC) it is just a mutt. Anyone who pays a lot of money for a mutt is just not thinking. I spend 3 hrs every Friday at the local Humane Society and see so many nice dogs getting homes. It's a wonder that people still think they're getting something special

    For all you linguaphiles:

Shih tzu, from the Chinese shizi gou- roughly means 'lion dog'

So with the two word spelling it shouldn't get many snickers... now if I could only think of a solution for shiitake mushrooms...

I would have done the same .I rescued a FULL blooded Rotty for $75 from the pound and she was spayed

Go purebred, i have one purebred Golden and 8 purebred Rotties...Get a reputable breeder, not just people that are trying to do it for money. Never really liked mutts...but there are good dogs in shelters up for adoption, i just like to know where mine come from.

I'm too much of a mutt to be a designer person. I'm an Italimishmash I guess?

If someone is looking for a dog as a companion, adoption is the way to go. The so called "designer" dogs are mostly to line someones pocket. The labradoodles caught on as an all round service dog for the handicapped. The only problem is , crossing the 2 breeds did not give them a non shedding dog like they hoped for. It did in some cases overcome some health problems the labs suffered. But without very careful breeding those problems will be back as strong as ever. Too many people are jumping on the band wagon and doing the mixes in their backyard. They medical problems will abound in no time. When someone hears that they can get 2 - 3 thousand for a so called "labradoodle" they want in on that money. They sad thing is, is that too many people don't know the difference from someone out to make a fast buck or that hard to find reputable dealer who will stand behind their pups.

Sounds like the world of horse breeding. People breeding their mare because she is "pretty." Regardless of the facts that she is toed-in, goose-rumped, swaybacked and mule-eared.. Taking a mare that does not even have papers herself and calling her a "quarterhorse type." And breeding her to their friend down the road's "arab-type" stallion to get a quarab!
No offense if you like Quarabs; they are not bad and I am not trying to single them out.. but when the parents' lineage is not even known, how can you even be sure that the parent is/was that breed at all!?

Re: Designer or mutt(aka mixed breed)

I work for a private dog groomer and you'd be AMAZED what people call us up telling us what kind of PUREBRED dogs they have. When we tell them or put it in our computer as a "mixed breed" they ALWAYS flip and go on to tell us how their dog was $1200 and has paper and is a purebred dog, etc. It makes me want to bang my head up against the wall.
