Re: Designer or mutt(aka mixed breed)

And yeah...the whole $800 puggle thing gave me the giggles. Now they're turning up on Craigslist, 2 or 3 years old, for free. Guess they didn't live up to their expected perfection...
When I was looking for a Dog, I got to talking with a professional dog breeder who was telling me that a lot of these designers are dogs that are just put together to see what would happen without any thought for the consequences. For instance, you cross a breed noted for having breathing problems (a Pug) with a breed noted for it's high energy (a poodle) and you're just bound to have health problems with your puggles. But the breeders just don't think that far ahead and want to create cute new dogs with an interesting look and make a name for themselves (and a few bucks while they're at it)

Re: Designer or mutt(aka mixed breed)

Had someone at the vets tell me he paid 5,000.00 for his puggle. I tried to keep the laughter back, I almost collapsed in the floor laughing. He couldn't walk out of there fast enough. I pay less than half that amount for great show puppies from top reputable breeders.

I've decided in honor of this new way of naming these so called "breeds" I will now and forever more be referred to as Joanna the Ukascot and my husband shall be Michael the Italish (gawd what will we name the kids....Mikey the Ukascotitalish is a bit of a mouthful really for a 6 year old! the older three, well their dad was scots both sides...so they get to be Ukascotscotsscots I guess)

Re: Designer or mutt(aka mixed breed)

Technically....Puggles are mix of pugs and beagles...the ones I've seen seem pretty healthy and good-natured (and are actually really really cute), but I wouldn't pay for them than for any other mixed breed. Beagles are pretty healthy, but hard-head and pugs are generally extremely sweet but of course have a whole palette of health issues to choose from...so it's not that bad a cross...you get a dog with a longer snout and a good temperament. But....it's still just a mutt. :-)

Re: Designer or mutt(aka mixed breed)

i paid $200 for my purebred puppy... a black lab.

got him at the humane society, and for the price he is sterilized, has a microchip, and all his shots.

i think a shelter or humane society is the way to go.
