i think my lamp is burning...

i have a lamp for the bearded dragons, currently there is a 100watt uvb light in it. and were smelling burning.. could it be the bulb is too high of wattage, is that likely? or could it be that its brand new and tahts why it smells like its burning? im at work most of the day and obviously dont want my house to burn down while im gone! could it be the wire burning?

You need to check the actual lamp to see how much watts/voltage the lamp itself can handle. You may need to buy a bigger lamp that can handle that kind of bulb. I would start there first.

ok we have two CA reptile heat and light dome hoods.. it does have a warning that the hood is made to handle up to 250 watts (shock i actually have a box to something!). so this bulb isnt too high of wattage...

Is it new? If so, that's normal and it will go away very soon(within 24-48 hours).

as long as you have a ceramic socket, it should be ok.

yup it has a ceramic socket.. well, its simply too hot for their enclosure anyway.. it was at 118 and still rising so it came out and the old one went back in. back to the drawing (pet store) board. at least they are eating really well.. thats a big jump from where we were with spartan, who mind you still isnt doing well per the breeder

Re: i think my lamp is burning...

The 45watt GE flood bulbs from WalMart and other hardware stores are only $5 and they last SO much longer than "reptile heat bulbs". They are nice and bright and give a good, even basking spot(alot of monitor keepers use them). I'd try one of those before getting anything from the pet store.

These are only $39.99 now, down from the $45 they used to be.
    http://www.reptileuv.com/megaray-sb-...d-uvb-lamp.php

They have good comparisons on which bulbs are safe, which bulbs aren't, and which bulbs don't produce anything but light(LOL).

Edit: Wanted to say that 111 was fine for the basking spot. You want between 110-115, thereabouts. If they have a cooler place to go, they're fine. I'm glad they're eating for you!
