The roos :)
I am not sure if I posted these guys yet. We had them for a few months and they were raised together and are friends. They never fight; if you get in between them though, the white one goes absolutely nuts and will even attack if you dare to pick up "his" rooster, the red one! They definately make life out in the barn interesting.

I love chickens. Roosters are awesome, we had tons of chickens when I lived on farm. They are pretty comical at times, we had this one Rooster that would follow me everywhere I went. Not sure why, but he kind of adopted me. I have seen one person get attacked by one, and it isn't pretty. When they are mad, there is no stopping those guys. The girl was torn up, she needed stitches everywhere.

Finally another chicken fan. As a child I had a pet Plymouth Rock hen named Roxanne. That chicken was downright spoiled. She'd settle in to ride around in the crook of my arm, softly cooing for pets. The crazy looks you get when you say you really really miss a pet chicken...
Other notable chickens from my youth were Fred and Red, two very evil roosters that loved to chase me around. One a Rhode Island Red and the other another Plymouth Rock.
Then there was the guard turkey.... turkeys are great for chasing away Jehovas Witnesses and pretty much anyone that comes up the drive, the memory of Teddy chasing people back to their car is a humorous one.

I hate to say it, but I'd be one giving you those crazy looks! I am NOT a fan of chickens for anything other than eating. When I was 6 I wandered into my friends chicken coop and they attacked! I have a small scar from where one of the roosters clawwed me. Ever since then the only use I have for them is food. Although I've had a lot of bad experiences with birds in general so I dont have much use for any of them!
Now, turkeys sound pretty cool. Maybe I could go for a turkey!

Re: The roos :)
Wow; these two would be unlikely to attack; they are pretty fearful of humans. The white one is more dominant and gets irate though, like I said! He did jump at Mark once when he grabbed Red; he does these karate-chop kick things. But we do not really handle them; they are not terrified of us though and when we go out for their feedings, they follow behind and know that you're the ticket to their breakfast. I was told that they poop everywhere but I really don't see it as a problem.. I just rake the floor of the barn every few days and the scattered straw absorbs any liquid pretty well.. their urate really resembles a snake's. And I keep my horse grooming things in a tack box for protection, or they would be picked apart and pooped on as well..
These guys are free-rangers. When people with dogs are coming out I just put them into a horse stall for protection though.. not for them, but from them! Since Whitey jumped at our LLord's dog I am not taking any chances.. but they are real homebodys and hardly ever leave the barn, even if I provide feed inside and out.
My friend has 1.1 pea:cens0r::cens0r::cens0r::cens0r::cens0r:! And they bred.. but the babies seem so fragile and I am sticking with these guys for now.

Re: The roos :)
Is the red boy a Rhode Island Red? I had a Rhode Island Red as a pet when I was a kid--we adopted him from one of our neighbors (who had a lot of chickens/roosters) as an older rooster. We had a few hens that were grown, but he was our first rooster. He was SUPER laid back.
One of my favorite pictures of Tom-Tom (the Rooster's name) was of him and our Mini Schnauzer sitting in front of the sliding glass door, looking into the house. They were just hangin' out together. Tom-Tom would let us carry him around...he was just so chill. He died after a few years with us.

Re: The roos :)
Hey, nice to see you around again We are not sure, but RI Red is our best guess as to Red's breed. He is much more laid-back than Whitey; and Red's calling is alot deeper and rustier-sounding.
I got these guys as adults and am really not sure how old they are. They are molting out now and while they do not seem any less feathery, there are feathers all over the place!

Re: The roos :)
Thanks for the welcome back Your Red boy looks a lot like the RI Red we had...I love chickens. The ones I had as a kid all had VERY distinct personalities. We had a few Bantam hens and one of them laid a clutch of eggs we didn't know about (she hid them)--ants got most of the eggs but a single egg hatched out and it was a boy. He was the meanest, nastiest rooster I've ever known--he was tiny, but spur-happy. Must have been a Napoleon complex? God forbid we even go into HIS area, near HIS hens, even if we were bringing them food.

Re: The roos :)
We had one of our runner hens get out and raise her chicks. She was our 'wild' chicken. Crazy thing too, you'd be upstairs and glance out your window and see three chickens staring back at you. I can't remember her breed, she was a running bred hen though. Bred to Red we believe.
I tell my husband all the time we're going to get chickens, he just glares at me and changes the subject lol.

Re: The roos :)
That is funny; we have another rooster that went feral. We got him a few months before we got these guys; he was a rescue from a fighting ring in the city. We put him in the barn but he seemed to just disappear.. then last week we saw him out in the far part of the yard, doing fine! But I do not think he will come back to the barn with the other roosters and by the way he was treated by humans before, I can't blame him for being feral now.
