Stopped the Spinning Spider?
Not sure how many of you checked out the cages I recently built for my older balls but I think they may have stopped my spider from spinning... Before I built the cages they were in tubs... obviously these open from the top... Whenever my spider was awake she was climbing around trying to figure a way out and use to spin like crazy... I just moved them into their new cages on saturday.... they were fed on sunday like always... I went in the snake room last night and watched em for a little while and my spider was no longer spinning... She just chilled pretty much near the front doors as she knows thats where she gets out from... So my question is do you think the switch may have fixed the problem? To me it makes sense somewhat that she wont spin as much now bc she wont be constantly climbing around trying to get out through the top as the doors are in the front... do i make any sense? Has anyone made a change like this and got the same results.... or am i just crazy? haha

Re: Stopped the Spinning Spider?
Spinning in spiders is a physiological issue and has nothing to do with the type of enclosures they are kept in. You are probably noticing less abnormal behavior because the ceiling of the cage is higher.
Hope that helps.

Is it true that all spiders spin? I want to get one and make some bee's but I'm scared if it has it, I won't be able to breed

Re: Stopped the Spinning Spider?
Brad the cage height is the same as her old one so thats pretty much ruled out as an explanation... I understand its a neurological disorder but it only kicks in when shes going upwards ... if shes not constantly going up (trying to get out) then to me it makes sense that it wouldnt kick in as much... I dont think shes stopped completely but i can say it has cut back on the amount a ton.
As far as not getting one beacuse it spins... My girl eats/sheds/poops and continues to put on weight like any other snake just gets a crazy neck every now and then... I cant say it effects her health in any way and she will be bred next yr when shes up to weight.

Spiders that "spin" don't necessarily do it constantly ... many only do it when they're excited or when food is introduced ... and there are many different behaviors that fall in to the category of "spinning" ... some are as slight as a simple head tilted on an angle (something that many people who claim that their spider doesn't spin overlook) to actions as extreme as barrel rolls and laying inverted.
Your spider is probably taking some time getting used to her new enclosure and is a little less active and not as relaxed ... once she gets settled, my guess is that you'll see her behave in the same way she did before.

Re: Stopped the Spinning Spider?
I heard someone once say that bright light stopped a spider from spinning?
They felt it was a vision related disorder. Because it immediately stopped when lighting was increased.
I don't think there is any evidence of what exactly cause this.
I have 2 spiders one does it a little and the other never spins. Just a little head bob (barely) right before she strikes her prey. if you didn't know what to look for you may never notice anything.

Re: Stopped the Spinning Spider?
Mine shows no signs other than when shes looking upwards... she use to always scale the wall and then when shes at the top would kinda loop backwards and do what adam would call a barrel roll or what not... I'm not too sure its because shes getting use to her new cage as she was moving around just like any other time the only difference was in her tub she was always scaling the walls and going upwards to get out and thats when youd notice the spinning... now she knows she doesnt get out from the top so shes not scaling the walls anymore... Its obviously pretty early to make a decent knowledgable guess but I will keep my eye on her.
