    Smaller breeders/sellers..?

I was wondering if you mostly sell off this year's offspring this year; or hold them back, grow them more and sell them next year? See, I can't really sell anything in the winter because I am not comfortable shipping in the wintertime. So it's either, decide to sell them now (the '07's) or pump them up and try this spring. So what would you advise?

    Re: Smaller breeders/sellers..?

    My personal view FWIW

This only relates to those I have decided not to hold back for my personal collection

I don't think there is any value in raising up normal males (from a pure resell point of view they won't get much more valuable the older/larger they get). They will make great pets for someone and if I was in the market for one getting him small and watching him grow up would be part of the experience of owning him...so for normal males I say sell now.

For normal females that you don't need they will get more valuable as they get closer to breeding age...but then after you have had them for 2-3 years are you really going to want to sell them at that point. You also have to consider the cost of keeping them (food, bedding, care, etc.) and will you make it back by keeping them.

For morphs they are just going to go down in price (again female breeders will go up but by how much vs. cost of keeping them)

So long story short is I plan to sell mine (only 2 or 3) once I get certified to ship (hopefully in the coming weeks) - this way I can start to build a name for myself, offer some great animals to those looking for a new pet and get experience in the whole "small breeder" areana.

It's been a while since I posted, life has taken different directions and I have been busy finding my way though the mazes.

For my part, I basically agreed with Lord Jackal, if I have new females, I usually keep the must unusual as I already have a full colony of female normals. So what I try to do is sell the males as suggested and fatten up the females. If you have your own rat colonies breeding, it's cheaper than one would think to feed a collection of boids.

I like to enjoy them as long as I can. The only thing that would make me want to sell them right away is if there was another morph that I would really like to add to my collection, then I would use whatever money I aquired from selling them to purchase that morph.

I would put them up for sale now and hold out until you get your price...worse comes to worse, you take down the add for the winter and then re-post them with their new prices (more $$ cause their bigger) in the spring.

If this is your first clutch ever, I would hold one back just for the memories...Good Luck with what ever you decide....

If you are planning on selling pastels that you hatched out, then by next year they will be worth less. I ship in the winter, don't have a problem with it. I avoid weather extremes however.

If you have future breeding plans in mind, hold back whatever you need.

It comes down to (From my point of view) what you need to hold back for future plans and what you don't.

i don't agree with the "worthless" comment...

imo, female pastels will always be great for combos! males are a great starter morph and someone looking for a pet.

Agreed, even male pastels have a place in breeding collections for back ups and combos as well. i hold back what i can unless i need space for other projects.

Shipping in winter is not uncommon common but you need to be aware of extreme temps not only in departure and arrival locations but also in route/connection places as well.

When pastels started dropping that just made me collect more and other morphs too. I plan on making some great combos so there will always be room in my collection for pastels, mojaves, cinnies no matter what prices drop to.
