Snakes have chromosome determined gender like us so aren't like some of the other reptiles that sometimes have incubation temperature determined gender.

However, snakes are different in that it's the mother's contribution that determines the gender of the babies (with people it's the father’s). Female snakes are zw and male snakes are zz. So if the female gives a w the baby is a girl and if mom gives a z it's a boy.
