Yep I'm Canadian born! Welcome to BPNet. Do check out Markus Jayne's website. It's an incredibly informative and well laid out site to understand genetics in a basic way. Once you are ready for more, grab a cup of coffee, a pad of paper and a pencil and have fun learning more about genetics and the punnet square than you'll ever think you wanted to know (this stuff is fascinating!).

Because you are thinking to breed at some point you might want to consider either a nice 07 hatched normal female or an 07 hatched het male as your daughter's pet. That way down the road this pet can also contribute to those breeding efforts. If, on the other hand, you want the snake purely as a pet then a nice normal male is a lovely and very cost effective choice.

Enjoy BPNet and please feel free to ask any questions that come up. With proper knowledge and planning plus going through a breeder rather than a pet store, your family is likely to have a wonderful experience with your very first ball python.
