    Story and Pictures....

Ok so my son is almost two yrs old and amazes me everyday with something new. I figured after all them stories that have been floating around BPs.net i should show kids are not always bad.

Today is feeding day with my 3 ball pythons, and my son has enjoyed looking, touching, and watching everything i do with the snakes. Like i said today was feeding day, so first i get the mice and rats home from the pet store and i wash them and dry them, and he is usually right behind me watching everything. Well i started feeding the snakes, the smallest ones first and then the big guy. I feed them in what i call the "Death Tub" so i feed them out of there cages and in a Rubbermaid tub. Well after feeding the first guy my son started screaming because he was hungry. So i forgot to give him his brownie lastnight with his Kidz Cuizine so i gave him his desert. And went back to my room and made sure everything was going alright. So i look at my son leaning against the baby gate looking at me and is reaching for a small rubbermaid tub on the ground (not in use). So i give it to him. Place the first snake back in his cage and get out the second one and started feeding him. Then i look over and see my son sitting on the floor in the hallway with his rubbersnake in the rubbermaid tub with his brownie, as he is saying, "Snake, sssssss, Snake!" and it happens to be "Snake" was one of his first few words so he loves them!

Its just amazing, he is trying to feed HIS pet snake, LIKE DADDY!!!

WARNING NO REAL SNAKES WERE HARMED DURING THIS SHOOTING!!!! LOL

Oh that is just too darn cute! Of course everyone knows that those rubber snakes simply find chocolate brownies very yummy too! Good job little herper!

Btw I think it's an absolutely excellent idea to have young children practise pet care/handling using a rubber snake or lizard or a stuffed animal shaped as a rat or bunny.

I am going to breed my 2 100% Albino Hets and what ever normals come out, i am going to set up a tank in his room so he can call one of them his, but i will do the taking care of for him, but that will be at least 2 yrs down the road because the hets are babies. and by that time he will be 4, but still to young i think for his "own" snake. I think when he understands there needs and how to be nice to them and handle them i will ask him, or wait for him to approach me and ask if he can have one of his own....

Yea, after i got my newest addition to my collection, i happen to come across that rubber snake at a store and he was so excited when he got his very OWN snake, he takes it everywhere with him. Some nights i even find it in bed with him... its the cutest darn thing ever.

    Re: Story and Pictures....

Awww Matt how sweet he sounds. Our Mikey was almost 6 when he got his first "personal" snake (very sadly she got loose and was lost to us...it broke his little heart)...anyways....he has a lovely male BP now and just really enjoys his snake. He doesn't really handle him much yet but he does help feed him and he really enjoys being my rat colony big boy helper. He'll walk through the rat tubs and tanks going "you've got a name, you aren't for eating...you don't got a name...you are for snake dinner". We also did an educational show at his school last year and he was one big proud fellow herper.

I think the snakes really are great when it comes to kids. I've watched all our kids learn a lot through their own personal ownership of snakes and assisting us with the whole collection and the rat colony that supports it. I'm sure you're little man will be much the same.

Gotta watch those kids though. One of my daughters, Beth, likes to wander around pointing out certain snakes and muttering "I'll take this one and this one when you die okay mom". Dang teenager always picks out the best snakes too. She's got a good eye for it, even if she's a bit morbid LOL.

That is a little morbid, but i would love it and be very pleased to hear something like that come from either my son or daughter when they come of age.

    Re: Story and Pictures....

Well to be honest it's partly a running joke (this daughter of mine has her momma's kind of strange sense of what is funny) and also Beth's a very practical soul. It's actually rather comforting to think one of our kids might want to continue on with our dreams once we aren't able to. She's also the one who at age 11 stated very firmly that she was going to have a Platty Daddy "just like that Ralph Davis" if it was the last thing she did. LOL
