    Hi, and welcome to BP.net!

How old is your new BP? A 40 gal is a HUGE enclosure for a young'un. But if you're able to maintain proper temps and humidity in a tank that size, and the snake is eating and acting normally, then it's fine.

But are you maintaining temps and humidity? I'm confused a bit by this:

all of a sudden my temp is 85 and staying about 60 on the other side
Does that mean the temps are dropping to 60 degrees in part of the tank?!? Or did you just mean that your high temps are only 85, but the humidity is still around 60%?

What are you using to measure your temps and humidity?

For the time being, it seems like things should be ok, unless your temps are dropping as low as it sounded. That would need to be fixed ASAP. If humidity is really at 60%, just keep watching and waiting for him to shed out and see how it goes.

Has he eaten for you, yet?

Alrighty...to boost the humidity up a bit, as you've already mentioned, you can put additional water bowls in there. A wide, shallow dish over the heat source will evaporate quickly. If that doesn't work well enough, you can also put some loose blobs of wet paper towels in there, and just change them out every other day or so for fresh ones.
