    noob questions

    Hi everyone,

I have been researching snakes for months now and am very interested in bp's I have a leopard gecko that i adore but would like to add another to my "family" ..... speaking of family thats why i didn't get a snake in the first place....no matter i don't live there anymore!

first off, i know that bp's, like most reptiles, like a quiet enviroment. I live in a studio apartment so i don't have a sperate quiet room to keep one in. our place is pretty calm, the most noise would be from the computers, when watching movies/playing games etc. do you think this would disturb them? obviously we keep the volume down to a reasonable rate but still......

second thing is, i live kinda in the middle of nowhere and snakes are not readily avaliable. I have found 2 pet stores that have bp's (both hours from where i live) - Iam not impressed with the way they keep them and iam pretty sure they are not captive bred (although i've never asked) I am going to the states in 2 weeks and was wondering if it would be ok to purchase a snake there and bring it home with me? do they travel ok in the car? i would have it in a secure carrier with someting to hide in as well as a heat pack to keep warm as well as making water avaliable overnight/during stops. does this sound like a reasonable plan? the last thing i would want to do is stress the animal beyond reason or endanger it's health/well being.

sorry if this isn't in the right place for this topic

    thanks everyone <3

I have those noises in my room...I don't think it causes problems.

Why even consider buying from a pet store that doesn't care for their snakes? there are PLENTY of reputable breeders amongst this site and others that would happily ship you a snake over night that is happy and healthy. Sure you can call it a "rescue"...but "rescue's" tend to need medical attention, and that cheap snake from the pet store turns into a huge burden. Happens a lot. If this is your first experience, I would recommend you order from one of the many fine breeders online.

I think your room will be fine. If things seem to get particularly bright and flashy, you can always drape a dark blanket or sheet over the enclosure. I do this with mine when I'm up late at night so that she still gets her "nighttime" even though I still have the lights on.

As for buying the snake....I'm assuming you're in Canada, but regardless, buying a snake in the states and carrying it across the border could cause you lots of legal troubles. Rather than do that, take some time to research breeders that you can buy from and have the snake shipped to you. Some American breeders will ship to Canada, and they will take care of all the border issues for you (although this can sometimes cause significant delays)......and there are also great folks in Canada that can ship directly to you and will stand behind the quality and health of their animals.

    Re: noob questions

i am pretty sure if you get a snake in the states and then try and bring it back to what ever country it's not a good idea. you will need CITES paper work and i am sure some sort of fee. just giving you a heads up, there are plenty of breeders in canada to get ball pythons from.

the only problem i would see living so far from a pet store is getting feeders. you'll have to order rodents in bulk and keep them in a freezer. thats hoping you get a snake that eats frozen. if you get a snake that eats live are you gonna be prepared to drive to the pet store once a week?

    Hi everyone,

thanks for your responses, sorry for not getting back online quickly :p

I do live in canada, and i have looked into taking reptiles across the border, no paperwork is needed (unless you are transporting a tortoise) all other reptiles/anpibians etc don't need it anymore.

If anyone can recommend a breeder in British Columbia i'd really appreciate it. I'll keep looking and I'll let you know how it all turns out
