If you're feeding every 5 days, then he gets fed tomorrow... Is there any possibility he can smell the rats from where he is?? If he can, and he's doing it at night maybe he's just trying to find his dinner!

It definately doesn't sound like it's caused by any sort of poor husbandry, congrats on getting everything sorted out so well!
