mites
Someone brought 2 baby corn snakes into the petco by my house. They both have mites under their scales and around their eyes. The people at petco arn't doing very much to get rid of the mites because they don't know what to do with them. Is there anything I can tell them to do? And they told me I can have the snakes for free because someone brought them back to the store and the can't sell them. I was thinking I could take them home and bring them to the vet. The problem with that is... I have a corn snake and ball python already and I don't want them to get mites too. My mom told me I can keep the 2 corns in my dad's workshop so they wouldn't be around my snakes. Would that work?

Re: mites
Reptile Relief can be used ON the snake can be found a Petsmart and Petco. Provent a Mite (u can buy it online) is used for caging, bedding, etc. Follow all directions and yes do keep the two corns in a seperate area than your current collection. Put them on paper towels or newspaper until the mites have cleared. I have no experience with mite or either treatments but people swear by the Provent a Mite.

Re: mites
definatly keep them away from your snakes. get a tub set up for each one, and order some provent-a-mite. follow the directions EXACTLY. give it a few treatments and a couple weeks, and you should be good. i would still keep them away from your other snakes for at least 90 days.
where are you located, i am sure there might be members near you that would take them from you and treat them, if you don't want to. i wouldn't let them stay in petco any longer then they already have.

Re: mites
you don't spray the snakes, you spray their enclosure, and then put them in it, the mites will die from the exposure. if you spray the snake, it could die. thats why i said follow the instructions on the can exactly

I'd keep them as far away from your collection as possible, and be sure to wash your hands thoroughly after you've been near the mite infested snakes. Also be sure to keep a close eye for contamination. Biggest thing is to just be smart about it in avoiding cross contamination. Good luck!

Re: mites
Also, with the hand washing, make sure if you have any long sleeves etc to change and wash your shirts right away. The mites can be hard to find on clothing and if you get any on it there is a chance they can get transferred over that way as well.
Good luck with the new corns!

Re: mites
also use paper towels as substrate. this will keep the little buggers from hiding on you. and always handle your other snakes before you do anything with the new ones. never handle the new snakes or mess with their enclosure, then go handle your other snakes. this can help from not spreading the mites. they can get transported on your clothes, hands, hair, anywhere.
