    Water bottle warning

Just FYI -- Be careful if you buy the glass Super pet chew proof water bottle. Make sure that it actually depenses water. I tried a few of these from a few different stores and they all have the same flaw. I think every single one of them is broken.

You can test it at first and it'll work fine, then you'll probably think nothing of it. Try it for a minute or two though just flicking it with your finger. On all of the ones i've tried it just runs dry after some point then won't dispense anymore water. If you look inside you can see a little air bubble formed around the hole in the cap going to the dispenser.

I really wanted to use this bottle since it's the only glass one I could find in the stores so I decided to try and fix it. I've had it fixed for an hour or two and it appears to be working fine with no leaks. I had the bottle in there just like it was for a few hours just to see if it would work maybe after time. The rats would go up to it, flick it a couple times then run away. Seemed kinda weird, none of them were staying there drinking. Once I put the fixed bottle in they sat there for like 5 minutes just drinking, so I could tell it was fixed and actually see bubbles floating to the top now.

    To fix it:

Pull the stainless steel cap off of the plastic cap/metal tube, should just slide off.

Pull the metal drinking tube out of the white plastic cap that screws on to the bottle, should just pull out.

Drill the smaller of the holes (the hole that faces the water) a little bigger with a 5/16 or slightly larger drill bit.

Put tube back in and metal cap back on if you want, I left it off since I didn't see the purpose.

    It looks like this:

Thanks for this information. It could certainly save some rats from death by dehydration in this summer heat. Have you thought about contacting the manufacturer about this. It could be a fault of design or simply a bad run of bottles that they may not be aware of.

I've had the same problem with these bottles. In the pet store where I work we set one of them up for a hamster that was bad about chewing the plastic ones. After a few hours I went back to check it and no water was being dispensed! On the other hand, we put in one of the larger models of the same kind with the guinea pigs and it seems to be working fine. So maybe it's only a certain size?

It's not isolated, it looks like none of them work. Look at the reviews on petco.com about that bottle. It's a design flaw, you would think they would have noticed before releasing it?

I got this water bottle because I heard that water out of glass bottles tasted better than plastic, so I bought this one. I had to take my first one back because it STOPPED dispensing water. My next one did the same thing. It just dispenses the water initially in the spout and after that you have to actually shake the bottle to get more to come out.
Please, don't put your animals through this.

I purchase two glass bottles, one 6oz and one 24oz glass bottle. My 6oz bottle is working for now! My 24oz has never worked properly. I just wish I didn't put the receipt in my shredder. I would have returned it. I have to keep hitting the top of the 24oz bottles to get water to drip from the bottom of the bottle! I have to check it ever day to make sure it's working correctly... I would rather it leak water then not produce any water at all. All the other bottles I purchased for my bird he ate right through the plastic bottles.
I thought, what a good idea - Hard Glass, it would have been nice if it worked though.

I could never get it work for my two rats. It would eventually stop providing water, I'd have to tap the top of it a few times but then it'd just seal up again. My rats ended up not trying it anymore and just drink from a bowl.

    Re: Water bottle warning

Considering it sounds like a design fault, I'd be taking these bottles back for a full refund. Glass rodent bottles aren't cheap and it's not fair to the rats to go thirsty like that. I'd also suggest you have a word with the pet store manager and make him/her aware of this issue and that selling these bottles is not a good idea until this issue is addressed by the manufacturer.

    Re: Water bottle warning

So it looks like most/all of them are having problems...guess I'll be having a word with my manager about discontinuing these bottles. At least the one we put in with the guinea pigs is working (they'd sucked about half the water out when I left early this afternoon). Thanks for the heads up that it wasn't just the one bottle!

    Re: Water bottle warning

I don't know what everyone is talking about. I have used these for months now with no problems. I hate the plastic ones; my rats will destroy one overnight. And I give them things to chew on.. maybe it was a defective shipment or something. Mine work fine!

I prefer Edstrom Water Buddies. They're not glass but tough PVC and I mount them outside the cages. But the valve is awesome. Silent, never leaks, and you can fill them from the top without removing them from the cage.
