I think more of the appropriately sized holes would make more sense.

That way it makes it easier to seal them over when higher humidity is needed (as in shedding).
But I forgot to ask - what is your current humidity and what are you using to measure it?

You could also try a smaller waterbowl or moving the waterbowl further from the warm end.
