Thermostat/rheostat

Hey Guys,
The primary heat system in my tank is an under tank heater and a heat lamp (50W). I've set up the tank as required, and modified and re-modified it a couple times at the recommendation of most of you. So here's my newest question:

I currently have a reptitemp 500r thermostat that I "aquired." I'd like to replace it with something of better quality. What are some model numbers of the popular brands that are good, but not rediculous, that I should purchase. I'm looking into the $70-120 range, with a single probe (simple to use, im new).

Also, What can I do to dim the heat lamp a bit? Rheostat? Etc?

your reptitherm, if I'm not mistaken, is actually a rheostat (dimmer), not a thermostat. If that's the case you can just use that for your light..

As for a good thermostat to use for your UTH, I'd suggest any of the "big 4" talked about here:

Ranco
Johnson Controls
Herpstat
Helix

Ranco and Johnson are both on/off type, which means they turn your pad on or off depending on the temp read by the probe. The herpstat and helix are proportional, meaning they vary the input power to maintain proper temp. Any of the 4 can be purchased well within your price range.

The reptitherm is a thermostat.... no temp markings on the side just a set dial. Right now it fires up at 90 and stops at 93.. but that was after much testing.... I'll look into the thermostats

i use johnson control a419's because they are smaller units then the rancos, but other then that basically the same. they are about $75, so would fit in your budget (it should be more like make your budget fit it ).
