Ok, time to get rid of walnut shells

Well, I had a bad feeling right after I put my 2 baby sand boas in them and found out first hand tonight.

Decided to take them out of the enclosure so opened the top, removed the big flat rock and started at the bottom and easily sift my hand through.

The female wasn't ready and immediately struck upwards.

She got a mouth full of shells and kept on opening her mouth to get them out.

Every time she did this I softly wiped off the piece the was on the outside of her mouth.

She eventually got most of them out and then when she seemed to get back to normal and placed her in the water dish and she got a lil drink.

Later this week I need to switch.

I heard that white paper stuff is good.

Thoughts?

i don't know much about sand boas, but don't they like being on sand? is that "white paper" your talking about newspaper? i find it hard to burrow in news paper myself

i have heard many bad stories about walnut shells, go i agree that you should change substrates. but i don't know about newspaper for a burrowing snake. maybe aspen or sani chips?

I believe n4s was talking about this type of substrate thats made from recycled newspaper, not just sheets of newspaper.


If you (n4s) are talking about the same stuff i'm thinking of, it SHOULD be alright, i just dont know how you plan on keeping it humid in there.

Well, there what I call a dry snake. They dont need much humidity at all.

Just gotta keep a h-box in there nearly the shedding process.

I'm well aware of the fact that they are a "dry snake." What i'm saying is i dont think it a bad idea to keep it atleast 10% in there for them.

My apt is usually humid to begin with cause I'm right off the delaware river.

Plus I do a few daily mists.

Well then you're all set, bud! The substrate we discussed should work fine.

My sand boa does quite well with aspen shavings, patted down so its compact enough to hold together the burrows. I think he gets really annoyed when I dig around trying to find him and ruining all the tunnels

Yeah but I'm guessing the walnuts shells dont hold tunnels.
