i ended up buying that anyways cuz i dont have tim to save up my room get hot as hell. if it malfunctions i can send back to manufacture and get a new one or my money back.

I think the point is if it malfunction you might end up burning your house down. Or burning your animal. Cheap thermostat are some thing to stay away from IMO. Do what you have to but save up and spend the 100 Bucks for a herpstat they are great quality, accurate within a degree or something like that. Most of all they have a fail safe built in to them if they ever malfunction they shut off to keep your house and your animal safe. just my 2 cents

remember expensive isnt always better jsut because the herp stats cost 100$ dont mean its gonan be 100% perfect. my work ues them for the coolers and they fail all the time always replacing them. so its a matter of prefrence.

Nothing is 100% perfect but I am of the opinion you get what you pay for. Just so you know you are the first person who I have ever heard say anything negative about a Herpstat. Good luck

Personally, everyone I know who has purchased a "Round top" (ESU, Alife etc.) thermostat has had it fail in one way or another. It can go either way, kick off and stay off (freeze your animal) or kick on and stay on (Cook your animal).


I have a few rancos and have not had any trouble with them. I have heard an increasing number people who have had trouble with them. I am thinking of switching to Johnson Controls or Herpstat.

I have never heard of a Herpstat failing.

your company uses herpstat thermostats? I'm not sure why a business would use a thermostat specifically designed for use with reptiles for their cooler...

Personally, and not to call you out too much here, but it sounds like you're trying to defend purchasing a lower quality product because you don't want to dish out the cash for something that's proven to work. I feel like that because I too have done it.

When I first got my ball pythons I was working with a large (55g) tank and was having trouble maintaining conditions (temp, humidity). I was told several times to not waste MORE money trying to make it work and just go to tubs. After sinking $45 for a UTH, $17 for a sheet of glass to seperate it into two enclosures, $20 for a screen top that didn't fit great, and $30 for lights and still not getting the results I needed I did the right thing and went to target and bought the tubs. Total I've got $20 invested in each tub, plus the cost of my thermometers ($10 each).

Believe me when I say that the people here KNOW what they're talking about, and you'd be wise to listen to their advice.

The Herpstat and the Helix DBS-1000 are not rated for very high wattage...500 watts for each.

You said you were using them for "coolers"...not sure what you mean by this...but I know that there are a lot of refridgeration or cooling units out there that would probably draw more power than 500 watts. That being the case, you could be using the thermostats incorrectly, and causing them to fail.

not for your huge coolers jsut small coolers like open end caps and stuff. they look jsut like herpstats i might os over looked it with tkai na closer look. but they fail all the time cuz of the people always poking into the coolers thats y. we use the rancos and johnsons for the freezers and big coolers
