The 3" adjustable air vent/cord grommet looks like it might work. I would try to avoid tape (last thing you want is it getting stuck to your snake). Maybe you could close it off using a scrap piece of wood screwed to it or something; sorry, don't really have a great answer for you as I've never tried to do this.

Nope, didn't think anything of the sort.

I only skimmed thru the PDF, how big is the substrate guard? I see it on the back I figure 2 - 2 1/2 inches big. Can you put on in the front so substraite doesn't fall thru the opening in the plexiglass? Maybe it's there maybe I am not seeing it.
It's there, take a closer look at the part where the 1x3's are attached and you'll see that they act as a bedding dam. It sticks up about 2" above the floor to act as a dam. There is one in the rear for additional support and for the peg board to anchor to. Let me know if you still don't see it.
