Basically, the story goes like this: My dad's girlfriend's son is getting rid of his 3 year old ball python. I'm taking it in. I've done lots of research over the years in preparation for purchasing my own... but now I guess I'm adopting a poor, unwanted snake. Oh well, I plan on giving him the home he deserves.

Anyway, onto the questions:

1) How do balls handle a smoking household? Do I need to move all smoking outside from now on?

2) I'm thinking of putting his tank between the kitchen door and our DVD shelf. TV is usually watched in this room and there is some traffic. Do I need to pick some place different? Will this upset him too much?

I realize my questions must sound idiotic to you, but he will be my first snake and I want to make sure everything is going to be alright for him. I don't want him to suffer from my own mistakes.

Congrats on the new snake! I would keep the smoking outside and away from the animal but that's just me. No animals should be subjected to cigarette smoke. As far as where the tank is located, the quieter the better. Balls don't have hearing per se but they can definitely feel vibrations and it will stress him/her out.

If its bad for you its bad for them.

Try and put it in a spot of low traffic and little background noise. Remember they hear by vibration and a tank is like a big speaker box.

*spaz* New question, new question. I just got my beautiful boy today, along with the tank and stuff he lived in and with before. Unfortunately, to my disappointment, there is no way at all that the lamp and his cage heating are keeping him at a good temperature. No way at all. I just want him to be healthy, happy, and comfortable. Can anyone recommend some good set-ups for heat? He came with a bottom-of-the-tank warmer and a lamp above... I just seriously doubt they're doing the job.

You can get an Acu~rite thermometer/hygrometer at Walmart for under $12. It will measure the temps on both warm and cool sides, so you won't have to guess at whether or not the temps are spot on

Alright... so a human heating pad should keep him okay in a 30 gallon tank, from what I see. This is just all so new, and my head is still spinning. >x.x<;; It doesn't say what setting I should keep it at... I suppose whatever setting gets his tank to the appropriate temperature, huh? I've read that some people use heat lamps during the day and the human heating pad at night... is this preferred?

I haven't taken any pictures yet. My Canon Rebel XT makes such starling noises, so who knows how much vibrations that gives off. I want him to be more comfortable in his new home before I snap pictures. I feel like some over-paranoid mum.

From what I've read human heat pads aren't recomended as they are not meant to run full time - the best solution would be a reptile heatmat coupled to a thermostat to control it (they can get waaaay to warm if run uncontrolled).

I want to point out that snakes have ancient respiratory systems that lack cilia, which our lungs have. Cilia are tiny hairs in your lungs that literally sweep particles and phlegm to where they can be coughed out.

Because of this, its extremely difficult for your snake to clean its lungs of smoke particles for example.
