Irrational Fear?
My fiance and I are going to an amusement park tomorrow and suddenly, all this fear is flooding into me. Normally, I love coasters and the like, but all of the sudden, I'm terrified. I was told about this girl who got her feet cut off when she was ridding a drop zone like ride at Six Flags. I would never get on one of those rides because I have an immense fear of falling. But normally I love riding rides at parks. I like coasters that flip upside down and spin you around and do loops. Thats fun. I'm sitting here now, though, thinking about all the what ifs. What if my bar pops open? What if I fall out of my shoulder restraint? What if the restraint comes loose. What if something goes wrong and something breaks and I get hurt? All of these what ifs are scaring the daylights out of me and I don't know where its coming from. I rode Shockwave after someone died on it and I was fine. I loved that ride. What is going on now?
Here is something that might rationalize it but not really. When I was four I fell out of a ferris wheel and broke both arms and shattered my upper jaw. The only thing I remember about the accident was the before and after, nothing of the actual fall. So, I could see why rides could scare be, but they've never scared me in the past. My parents thought it was actually amazing that I ever step foot on another ride again, but I did and have been all my life. I even got back on a ferris wheel a few years ago. Scared me too much and I won't do it again, but I just don't understand where all this is coming from all of the sudden like this.
Any thoughts?

Um... I think your theory might be right.
I know if that happened to me I wouldn't walk within a mile of an amusment park.

Re: Irrational Fear?
That was absolutely insane what happenedto that girl.
I will never do drop zone!
I was supposed to the next time we went to KD. but not no more!!!
Your fear is totally rational!

Re: Irrational Fear?
But the problem is, I used to never have this fear. People would get hurt on rides, rides that I enjoy even after the incident involving that ride and I still ride them. This fear is hitting me in the face 16 years later. I once had a dream while on a band trip a few years ago about falling out the the Hulk coaster. The next day, I was on that coaster, no problem.
Its all so weird and annoying because I want to have a good day tomorrow and not be worrying about whats going to happen.

My home town made the news! W00t!
They got her feet reattached, and they are removing the ride, which sucks cause I really liked it. Ever since Six Flags bought Kentucky Kingdom that park has just gotten worse and worse. All the good rides are being removed, kiddy crap is taking over, its losing its coolness everyday. It used to be a cool place to hang out at back in highschool, now its more like a day care.
I personally think they should leave the ride in, just replace the cables. It used to be called the Hellavater, they just changed the name to Supermans Dropzone and painted it blue and red, no idea why they didnt inspect the ride at that time.
The girl has her feet back, a lawsuit that will be settled by the park and she and her family will be set for many many generations. She may be having a rough now, but in time she will look back on this as the best thing that could of happen to her...Now, if they couldnt get her feet back on or if the ride would of hit her neck, then it would be totally different.
I just spent the past two days at Universal and Islands of Adventure, I love all the rides out there and I hardly ever feel any kind of fear about them. But if you sit there and do alot of thinking, you will be scared beyound all reason. You cant think about the ride, all the what ifs, you just gotta do it. The more you think, the worse it gets, look at your normal life, and look at all the what if's with that, can you imagine how scared you would be? What if someone in oncoming traffic crossed the lane and hit you head on? What is someone ran a red light and t-boned you? What if someone robbed your house in the middle of the night? what if someone put a gun to your head demanding your car? What ifs are the worst thing you can do to yourself. Theme parks are there for fun, go out there and have a blast!

Re: Irrational Fear?
I never had a fear of roller coasters until about 4 years ago when we took our children to Knotts, I was terrified the entire time one of my kids were gonna fall out and didn't enjoy myself at all. No clue what caused the fear tho. I have somewhat gotten over this fear but I cannot ride with my youngest and my 11 year old dont like to ride with me cuz she dont want me to "freak" out on her as she puts it lol. I just came to the conclusion that I have finally lost my no-fear factor and realized that people can get hurt.

Ok, this one actually makes me lose sleep at least twice a week. I'm not sure it's an irrational fear, though, as we do have a problem with home invasions in DFW. Maybe not so much in Plano itself, but still! I wake up in the wee hours and walk around the house checking locks and making sure the alarm is on regularly.
As for rides...I was thinking about riding Superman until this accident happened. Jeff explained to me that our Superman is made differently from the one the cable snapped on, but that information isn't really helping, heh. I do like the Tower of Terror in Orlando, though, maybe because it's mostly enclosed.
