    hide??????

i know with bp's that you have to have a hide but with rtb's i am unclear i have seen on some sites they do not and some say they do require one obviously i will have one or two but is it really required with these they dont seem as shy as a bp?????? just wondering. thats all i plan to get one in about 2 weeks at the san diego rep expo.

    Re: hide??????

you don't really have to have a hide with a RTB.

they are not nearly as shy as bp's.

    they are great snakes btw!

    Re: hide??????

We offer our 05 male BCI's a dark hide on the warm side. Sometimes they use it, sometimes they burrow under their thick substrate, sometimes they just laze about out in the open. Because they are in big glass enclosures I do also have dark blue bed sheets over part of their cool sides. It helps keep in the temps with the huge mesh lids they have plus gives them an added sense of security as they move about.

    Re: hide??????

babies - 2 years old I give at least one hide. Adults, it depends if they are in a boaphile-typo cage or a mesh screen tank and how their eating habits are. I know my big female destroys hides and does just as well without one.

    Re: hide??????

I have two RTB's that are both about a year and a half old and I put two hides in each of their tubs. One at the cool end and one at the warm end, but neither one uses them at all. I have mine in an AP rack which is in a fairly dark room so I figure they feel pretty secure as is. Their whole enclosure is like one big cave for them. When they are young it's probably worthwhile to provide at least one hide, but generally once they are older they're not needed. My boas are far less secretive than my ball pythons were. Gotta love the feeding response too. My bp's were a royal PITA when it came to feeding, but the boas would eat every other day if I let them. They are like garbage disposals!

    Re: hide??????

I would use one when you first get the snake and see if the snake uses it. If s/he doesn't use the hide just take it out.

    Re: hide??????

I have a hide on both end of my snakes cage. And he never gets out of the hides all he does is sleep. He is not active at all in his cage but he is avtive when u take him out of the cage. So i guess it depends of the snke?

    Re: hide??????

What sort of enclosure do you have and where in the house is it located? I think that may have quite a bit to do with their use of the hides. I keep my boas in their own room where there is absolutely no traffic and they are in racks that are very dark inside so their entire enclosure is essentially a big hide. If you have a glass aquarium in the middle of the livingroom that would make a huge difference I believe.

Regardless, even if they never use the hides at all like my boas it's not going to hurt anything to have them available.
