For some reason I thought the Smooth Green Snake was endangered and that you couldn't keep it as a pet...maybe I'm wrong. My friend at school, Jaime, had a Rough Green Snake, which seems to be related to the Smooth. She had trouble getting it to eat at first, but she discovered that it preferred worms to crickets and got it eating. Unfortunately, she had two episodes of mite infestation (be careful when buying reptiles from PetCo--where she got hers--or other chain stores...) and because she failed to notice/treat the second infestation--her snake ended up dying. I believe it likely died from dehydration/blood loss--I saw the snake covered in mites and there were a LOT of mites for such a small snake...

So, I guess the moral is:

-- Buy your snake from a reliable source
-- Be prepared to figure out what insect type it prefers
-- Be prepared to make an optimal environment for it (Jaime's spent much of its time in a little fake tree thing she had in his enclosure)

If it weren't for the mites, Jaime's Green Snake might have thrived.
