    Anybody ever have this problem?

Ok so I was setting up my BP in a tub. I finally gave in and moved him from a glass tank to a tub because it is so much easier. Well since the room he is in is at a constant 82 and doesn't change, I got a rheostat instead of a thermostat. Well the problem is, even with the dial turned all the way down it still gets too hot. I guess what I'm finding out is that zoo med products are crap. Anybody have a fix for this? Or do I just need to get a new heating pad or rheostat?

I had this problem when I had a rheostat. No matter what you do, it will never be quite right, and my temperature almost always ran too hot. I think you definetly need to invest in a thermostat. I got mine for about 30 bucks, I think it was Reptile Depot, and it works great. You will no longer have to be adjusting the temperature every half an hour to get it right.

Get yourself a lamp dimmer from Lowe's, Home Depot, maybe even WalMart.

edit - yeah, what darkangel said. Thermostat much better than rheostat (lamp dimmer).

I think you are probably just best off spending your money on a thermostat... save you a lot of hassle and provide for a good nights sleep at the same time.

    Agreed!

You can get a prewired Ranco from Reptilebasics for $75...well worth and will last a LONG time.

Ok, looks like I'm going the thermostat route then. Good thing that I didn't acutally buy the rheostat. I got it from a friend. So if I go for a thermostat and I have two identical tubs set up, then can I use one thermostat for both or would I have to go with two?

Re: Anybody ever have this problem?

I used heat cable in both of mine and they were set up the same, so I set the thermostat probe in only one of the tubs, and plugged both heating sources in. My thermostat will support three outlets for heating devices.

Agreed. invest in a thermostat, but if you can't get a thermostat right now, make a new rheostat from a $6 dimmer and a $1.29 extension cord. They can be turned all the way down. I made 4 of them just to have around in case of an emergency, and I also use one for my rack with no problems. The worst that's ever happened was when I started using my AC this year it dropped down to 87-88 on the hot side for half a day.
