    Odd behavior? *Lots of pics*

My female jade does some weird things. In the afternoons she climbs to the top of her tree and stays perched up there till early evening when I get home then she climbs down and goes in her hide:

After she climbs down she goes in her hide and then sticks her head out and leaves it out in the open but keeps the rest of her body in the hide. I have seen her come out to drink alot:

But she constantly keeps some of her outside the hide. When I get up and walk around she pulls herself back in, but then after she calms down she goes back to this:

By morning she will either be in the hide or back up in the tree.....Anyone else BP act this way in any way shape or form?

She sounds like a cool snake!

Mine sometimes does the head hanging out thing which I call "on duty". When he does it he also likes to pull back in. He usually waits till I walk by and then pulls back in - trying to be a sneaky snakey - thinking I didn't see him. I usually just tell him to quit being so skittish!

Mine also drinks in exactly the same fashion. Especially after feeding he'll go for the extended drink.

To some extent I can see some change in behavior when I'm around but nothing like yours.

Your story is very interesting. I've read accounts like this before that suggest that the snakes can bond. Has she always had her "tree"? I have a grape-wood log but there are no leaves so Snakey has to be in a pretty relaxed mood to hang out on it. I wonder if some leaves or other cover would make it more enticing for him.

when I first got her she was in a small tub, then she upgraded to this tank, just just started acting like this about a week ago, now its almost clockwork. She eats great, is putting on weight, has had all perfect sheds, just didn't know what to think about this, my male, I never see him except when I come home he pokes his head out, says hi, then goes back in and thats it.

Mine drinks the same way, and she actually refuses to use hides. I've gone smaller and smaller and smaller and no matter what I put in there she wont use it. Instead she shoves herself under a "fallen log" and when she feels movement around her she picks up her head. It's like a dog laying in a dog house. -lol-

As for the tree thing, she just wants to be an emerald tree boa when she grows up. She's practicing. You have to be supportive. -lol-

I love the first drinking picture! They are too cute when they drink. I see Lilly drink alot, and almost always after she eats or I put her back from having her out. ^_^

lol, sounds like a fun snake! I wish mine was that cool.

My ball python, "Lil' Dude", just sleeps in his hides all day... and night as well. Haha eventualy he will come out and bask on top of his hides. The first time he did this i was so stoked, but come to find out, the only reason he left his hide is cause he crapped in it.

couldn't stand the smell of his on poop. lol... snakes

    anyways cool snake

Yea the drinking and the periscoping gives puppies and kittens a run for their money as far as I'm concerned. "Awwwwww....."

I don't use manufactured hides but instead arrange them out of peet moss, grape-wood, and cork bark. I'm always experimenting with the cage layout and I've found it has a big impact on my boy's behavior. Dont' get me wrong - he continues to be lazy. But, I think more nooks and crannies about the place encourages them to come out more. If you have upside down planter bottoms surrounded by a newspaper wasteland then I would expect them to hole up all the time.

I have a glass aquarium and I've definately found that having the area around the cage closed in a bit makes a difference.

With whats being said in here I think I might add alot more cover in my males tank to see if that will encourage him to come out.
