    Leos Food Questions

Ok, I have considered getting two of these but have a few questions.

    Should be easy.

I'm not too fond of feeding bugs. Mealworms aint too bad but crickets seem like they'd be a pain.

What type of enclosures do you keep for each food?

How many times a day do you feed them?

Are there any other foods they eat? Greens?

Does there skin break sometimes like i read about Day Geckos?

    thnx

I don't deal with crickets but I can tell you what I do for mealworms. I keep them in a small tupperware container thats about 2/3 full of oats, they burrow in and eat the oats. I actually have 3 separate containers because I breed them and separate the different life stages. If you want to just buy a bunch of mealworms and keep them as mealworms without metamorphosis, I suggest putting them in a bag/container in the fridge (make sure its a very secure container!) They should last somewhere between 2-3 months in there.

I have a small dish in my leo's enclosure that I keep filled with mealworms 24/7, so he can just eat whenever he wants and I don't have to worry about it (Make sure you dust them with calcium powder).

They don't need any greens as far as I know. The only other food people occasionally feed to a leo besides mealies and crickets would be pinkie mice. That is only when they are full grown adults, and it is just a treat, not a regular food item. Personally I don't think it is a good idea, it just seems like it would be very hard for a leo to do that. Its not like they have jaws like a snake.

As for skin breaking, I've never experienced that with my leo or heard of it ever happening (unless your talking about something relating to shedding, which isn't really 'skin breaking') The only time I'd be worried about any skin breaking would be if you fed one a pinkie.

Sorry for the lengthy post, just tryin' to help

Almost all species of day geckos have skin that is far to fragile for handling. Leopard geckos do not have this problem.

I feed superworms to my adult leos with absolutely no problems. Keping superworms is almost exactly like keeping mealworms, except superworms must be keep at around room temperatures....you can't refridgerate them, they'll die.

you can also feed phoenix worms, occasional wax worms and feeder roaches. phoenix worms are really easy and very nutritious--they come in a cup with everything they need to survive and just need to be kept at room temperature. put a bunch of them in a dish for your leo every few days or alternate them with other insects.

Those Superworms scare the bejesus out of me! I'll stick with large mealies and crickets! LOL

I keep crickets in a cricket keeper, makes it very easy to transfer crickets into the leo's enclosure.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the phoenix worms. I fed last year's hatchlings a lot of phoenix worms in the early months as I wasn't always able to obtain small enough crickets.

does anyone know what your supposed to feed mealworms to prevent them from metamorphosing? you know so they grow huge? I remember reading something about that...

    Re: Leos Food Questions

mealworms don't get huge--you might be thinking of superworms. you can keep mealworms in the refridgerator to keep them from turning into larva and then beetles--basically they go dormant in the cold.
