humid hide question

I know for a humid hide most people use sphagnum moss, vermiculite, or moist paper towels. I was just wondering if using a small sponge would work? I just find everything else too messy. I've been using sphagnum moss and my leo just kicks it around everywhere outside his hide.

Moist paper towels, changed out after 2-3 days because they will get gross(think warm petri-dish growing bacteria).

Do you ever think about your kitchen sponge? It harbors ALOT of bacteria and is kept constantly wet.. Sponges are GROSS, to be short and sweet.

I've never felt the need to use anything other than paper towels. No risk of impaction, no risk of them eating it.

And if he's getting sphagnum moss outside of the humid hide, why not use another container that has a hole in the top, in the lid?

I agree, sponges are nasty. I wouldn't use one. I know a lot of them come with soap stuff already in them. Have you ever noticed when you use a brand new sponge it feels slimy almost? Then when you get it wet its soapy. I don't think that would be healthy for your leo.

I would just use a container with a hole in the top. I personally use papertowel. Never had a mess with it. Then just change it out every couple of days.

I used eco earth back when I had my breeding group of leos for the humid hide. It allowed them to bury eggs as well as be humid(duh!). Now I just use paper towels and keep them moist

For a humid hide I used a 6w x 12L x 4h container with the lid on and a hole in the side near the top of one side. I used vermiculite and just keep it moist. check it everyday when you are feeding and spray it down and move it around to keep it evenly moist. Your female's will lay there eggs inside the hide and pile all the vermiculite to one end to cover there eggs. Having the humid hide will also keep your gecko's skin looking nice.

I use moss with a hole in the top of the rubbermaid container. It has alway sworked for me. The sponge is definatly a bacteria play ground.
