    Exclamation Help! Pls support Maggie

Here's one I found just now, while floating around the web before going home.

    http://www.adn.com/news/alaska/ancho...-8813356c.html

Pls send your support so that the zoo board members don't feel so pressured by PETA (the blood-sucking bstages that they are) and so that the board can feel encouraged to make the RIGHT and CARING decison for Maggie.

    Thanks!!!

It does seem from that article that the zoo isn't able to provide the changes in her enclosure that would benefit an elephant and unless I read it wrong, she's housed alone as their only elephant at that zoo. I really think that's awfully wrong as these are social creatures where all females live their entire lives within their matriarchial group. I don't support PETA but I do think that any zoo must put the animal's best interests above their own desire to exhibit that particular species.

I agree 100%. They are a very social animal. Due to their massive weight she must have the proper footing to make it for the long haul.

You could take PETA completely out of the equation here and see that this elephant needs a better home for her. I think this might be the first sensible thing I've ever heard of them supporting, actually.

If the elephant needs a better facility, than the zoo should place her somewhere better. The days of a single speciman of each species is long gone, and elepants relaly should have others around for social and emotional health.

    Re: Help! Pls support Maggie

That's all true, but that isn't the entire story. It's just too dam* convenient that PETA has their bloody hands in it too.

I'm all for moving the elephant, or doing what healthiest for her, but PETA getting involved does not bode well.

    Re: Help! Pls support Maggie

I dont want Maggie to leave! she is awesome and a sweet animal. I got very lucky when I was 15 to get to touch Maggie and feed her treats. Alaska is my home and it is hers to. I have already e mailed them about my feelings twards this issue. Maggie also has a strong bond with her keeper. I doubt her keeper would be able to go with her, and that could be the differents between life and death for Maggie.

I'm sorry I feel very strongly about this issue and it breaks my heart to see this happen to the zoo i love and to Maggie.

    Edit:
There are better ways to go about this with out PETA getting there grubby hands dirty in this.

I want to really see the outcome of this whole thing. I think donations to the zoo would be a sencabel thing. at least in my book. I dont want Maggie to leave but some things in this story are not adding up. The full story is not there. Depending on her health and what the experts think they should do the right thing.

Until then I'm still for her staying in Alaska.

    Re: Help! Pls support Maggie

Probably a good solution would be for the zoo to adopt another elephant that Maggie can bond with but if they are having problems supporting one elephant that may not be a workable solution.

    Re: Help! Pls support Maggie

As hard as this will be for her keeper, it sounds like the right move for Maggie. To be integrated into a herd and live out her life in the company of her own kind will be a far better experience for her. Sad that she lost her companion who was only 33, that's far too young for a healthy elephant to pass.
