    Question high school days...

i read a thread in a different forum that was discussing high school students now compared to when we were in school. people were talking about how teens today are completely out of control, irresponsible, doing drugs, having babies, etc. for me, it's been five years since graduation.... and, yes, i look at teens today and ask myself "what the hell are they thinking???" but then, when i look back to my h.s. days, i don't think anything's really changed besides my perspective.

    any thoughts?

Still in HS and i don't really think ist changed a whole lot since my cousins graduated 10 yrs ago. You do get the utterly stupid people who are in HS but theres a group of them in every school. The drug thing may have gotten a little worse but thats probably the only big change.

At least 50% of that list was quite hard to find in my peers when I was in high school.

Well, when I went to high school almost 20 years ago, I knew plenty of out of control, drug using, early parent teens. Today, heroin seems to be more prevalent, but in the 80's everyone did cocaine. And the bars were a lot more relaxed about letting kids in, and there weren't any laws about selling cigs to minors. I had more hassle in my 20's on both of those counts than I ever did in my teens.

The biggest change I've seen (and I have a teen in high school now) is in the education system itself. Most health text books now teach abstinence only, and the failure rates of prophylactics. Schools are extremely underfunded, classrooms are more crowded than ever, and teachers are so underpaid that they don't really care about the 'problem kids', they rely on zero tolerance to get rid of them.
"No child left behind" is a complete failure, and most parents don't even realize what's happening, or have time to educate their own kids.

    Right!?!?!?
But I'd give my left pinkie toe to look like I did back then.... lol Just playin'... I've earned everyone bit of my age and "expansion"!

I hear you Sarah........ I've heard some pretty scary numbers............

But I do need to add that I was impressed with a 13 yr. old that I know... well not him.... but his teachers. He wound up in the ARD? program. They went WAY out of their way to make sure he had a teacher that worked with/for him...

And let me tell ya.... I couldn't have thought that child.

    Re: high school days...

I was in HS in the 80's and I don't think alot has changed since then.

Maybe that the kids look more grown up!

and seem to develop faster than we did!

however....drugs of all kinds were HUGE in the 80's around here.

I was a school bus driver for 5 1/2 years out of the same town I grew up in and I think the kids are a little easier gong than we were. I never had a problem with my high schoolers. Middle school now...they were bad and annoying! lol. but that is the age group.

I think we dressed a little more provacatively in the 80's. and we were allowed! There was never really a dress code then and we even had a smoking courtyard. For us 'adults' lol.

Pretty much we did what we wanted. and very seldom got caught or in trouble.

Now there is a 'No Tolerance' policy on everything!!!

    Re: high school days...

I don't think there were many metal detectors installed in schools 15-20 years ago...=P

Drugs and pregnancy, nothing new there. I think clothing kids wear isn't appropriate for school. I mean, I really don't care if someone wants to look at my boobs, but I find it distracting from learning or working, so you know, I just don't wear those tops to the office. But watch out when I go out!

The flip side to looking at how that age group has changed is also to look at the parents...has parenting generally gotten better or worse? It's a good question.
