Deep muscle massages?
Alright, so here's the deal. I have some pretty crazy ADHD, and even on my meds I have fidgety hands or feet. I am in constant motion 24/7. Yes, even in my sleep (actually have a giant bruise on my arm from where my gf punched me last night to get me to stop). Because of this many of my female friends take advantage of my need to be doing something at all times and they get quite a few free massages. God knows I've had alot of practice and many of them are quite jealous of my gf (who happens to be the only person I'll give a foot massage b/c she takes special care of those puppies, LOL), many of which tell me I should drop out of college and become a massage therapist and give them massages for free! lol.
Well... I do quite alot of PT (physical training) and never really had a real massage, usually they're just the one's girls give without a clue what they're really doing sorta massages, not the "find the knots/deferred pain pressure points and elimnate them" real deep muscle massage. Well, I had one today and I can say is... tylenol isn't strong enough to stop the pain. Apparently my back and shoulders are a minefield of dehydrated super-knots that when leaving a professional massage therapist I was in more pain than when I had a clean break in my femur. The crazy thing was, I was only tired when I went in, not really sore even. and now.... bending my back/neck in any way is quite the experience.
I guess my point of this long winded post in a nutshell is, for years I've been giving such massages and never really understood it when they would wince when I hit a knot and now.... holy moley. Anyone else had a particularly painful massage experience.

Re: Deep muscle massages?
the only times i've had truly painful massages was when there was an injury to the area to start with and the massage was a means to fix it. for instance, i had a hernia in my upper back due to an injury and my chiropractor did deep tissue massage on and around it in order to loosen it up and get the muscle to go back to its normal state. of course that hurt, because it was already painful, but the massage was neccesary to get the muscle to relax enough to de-herniate (is that a word? ). the absolute most painful massage i ever had was one done on my calf muscle after it cramped and wouldn't uncramp--i think i actually levitated off of the table during that massage.
in any case, i don't think that you should be in that much pain from a normal, working out the knots massage. maybe try a different massage therapist next time and see how that goes, but i might go ahead and mark this person you went to off the list.

I've had a couple massages, and I LOVE them. Usually I only have a few knots, and generally leave feeling like jello. It's usually hard to drive home because I want to gush into a little puddle and sleep. Although the areas with knots are sore, but it's a good pain.
You should try start stretching out those muscles that hurt so much more often. Yoga's great for that. (and no you don't have to start burning insensce and chanting ooohhmmmm - but if you want to wear a cute outfit that's ok )
HAHAHA! Not y'all too! lol
yea, I knew going in that I'd have atleast a few knots there b/c recently when I work out my shoulders tighten up alot faster than they used to, and I know that breaking up knots isn't exactly painless, however I didn't know mine would be so bad. According to the therapist many of mine are really old and have just gotten worse and worse since I upp'd my workout schedule a year ago and apparently they're dehydrated which makes the muscle connective tissue even harder to set straight. I guess it's time to bust out the extra UTHs I got and use them as heating pads (LOL), do some extra stretching, and drink alot more water. I can't wait to get rid of a majority of these knots so that I CAN actually have a relaxing massage.
Oh yea... so you want pics once I get that "cute outfit"? LOL

But... it's just so much using the digger. You know us boys and our toys... Just hate being on the receiving end for once. haha

Calf cramps are the worst IMHO. I've only had one really bad one and I ended up getting out my mom's rolling pin and mega rolled my leg. Was sorta a trainwreck situation, hurt so much but in some twisted way I found pleasure in it. Then when I got out the knot I just had a rubbery feel-good leg.
...and yea, Imma try another next time.

Ugh, I had a neck spasm and honestly, labor was less painful. I still have problems turning my head.

Re: Deep muscle massages?
OUCH! You come to appreciate all the muscles that are involved in such simple movements when you are in pain.
You should definitely be stretching your neck out on a daily basis. It makes a huge difference. Never go to pain though in your stretches, just a mild muscle tension. Simple ones being... put your right ear to right shoulder and same with the other side chin to chest and chin up. Then simple rolls and shoulder shrugs as well.
