    how many rats

This is a question to those of you who breed rats for food. How many rats do you have per snake?

I have 17 snakes ATM and my 12 females are doing fine, but there are some weeks when I have to find some elsewhere. I was thinking about upping my females to have a 1:1 for rats:snakes
    lots of snakes

    Re: how many rats

I have 22 snakes and 32 breeding female rats - with 3 males that get rotated. This seems to work for me, I have 2 corns and 3 baby BP's that eat pinks, 16 yearling + BP's that eat pups and weanlings and 1 Carpet that eats anything that gets to big to feed to the balls. Occassionally I will sell a few to the local pet store if for some reason I get a bunch of really big litters but so far I seem to have a good balance.

    Re: how many rats

My rule of thumb has been one breedable female rat per snake. This usually provides us with perfect amounts of food to feed once a week. We normally don't have much excess, but the excess we do have is usually used to grow up and replcae retired breeders or deaths of breeders.

    Re: how many rats

Well, I have 4 breeding females, 2 close to breeding size, and 1 male rat. So far it looks like this is going to be enough for me. I have 6 balls to feed, a carpet, and a blood.(carpet and blood are still small)

    Re: how many rats

I have 8 bps (3 adults, rest are subadult.) 1 bci adult male, and 1 corn adult. I have 6 active breeder female rats and have bumped it up to 2 males. I was running low and had to buy some every so often in the smaller sizes, but hopefully now that I have omre girls (added one recently too) it will be more productive.

    Re: how many rats

Like Tim I go with 1 female breeding size rat per snake. With nice sized litters that allows me to rotate and rest females as needed and still have a steady supply of various feeder sizes. We use 2 or 3 males rotating in and out of the breeding tub to keep our lines from being inbred. I always try to buddy breed so I have more than one female in with 1 male at a time. That way I have sufficient pinks/fuzzies/pups plus I can foster from an overly large litter to another female with the same age young if needed.
