They're called "Spiders" because...well we're on the "web"...and they crawl from site to site to site to site picking up links....one of the ways search engines rank web sites is by how many web sites are linked to it. The more web sites that are linked to one web site, the more legitimate it probably is.

Google bots will usually have one or two on forums at once...but Yahoo! has a bajillion. It was a while back when that record was set and if memory serves, Matt (Smulkin) blocked like one IP address and they ALL left....so no there was never ~400 unique users online at the same time....damn..bubble buster
