    Mesh question

My last rat rack, I used 1/2 mesh and the rats seem to have a hard time getting the lab block through it. Is there any way to make it easier for the food to go through?

    Re: Mesh question

The blocks don't actually have to come through the mesh (actually the idea is that they don't so they stay off of the bedding and therefore clean) the rats should just chew on them and nibble off bites through the mesh.

    Re: Mesh question

They seem to have problems getting ANY food through it. My idea is it make a small area with 1" by 1/2" holes so the food will come through easier.

    Re: Mesh question

I think you are just perceiving an issue. I have been breeding 100's of rats for years on 1/2" mesh without issue.

If you go to 1" x 1/2" you risk the babies being able to get out as the mesh will spread over time.

I will try and get a picture today of some of them eating to show you how it should look

    Re: Mesh question

Its my understanding that rats prefer food they have to work for over food that is easily accessible, when given the choice. I guess they need something to do.

1/2" mesh is perfect. I haven't had a single rat go hungry.

    Re: Mesh question

Even the baby rats quickly learn to hang upside down on the 1/2 mesh to eat.

Yes they do and it is very cute to watch an entire litter hang upside down and eat

That would be awesome. The lab block I use just seems to be too big for them to get any.

They use their paws and hold one corner of a lab block through the mesh and eat it that way....
