    New

hello, i'm new to ball pythons. i've been keeping insects for 3 years and recently got into snakes. i have an adult corn snake right now and just ordered a baby female ball python from florida, which is shipping over night tomorrow and will arrive thursday morning.

here is a picture of her from my photobucket

anyways, i'm going to the pet store today to get all the supplies for her. i've been reading about BPs for about 2 weeks now and i think i have the basics down. i have never raised a baby snake before though, i bought my corn fully grown. if i have any questions i'll be sure to ask here.

i am sure you have a nice pet store but there are alot of better supplies online. i know youre snakes arriving tomorrow, but what i would do is set up a temp home, while you order things online.

i am just speaking from experience. i went out and bought a tank, the heat pads, the heat lamps, the substrate, a hide, dial thermometer and hygrometer, ect. now all those things are sitting in a box cause i made a better set up after reading on here for weeks.

check out the caresheets and there are some threads about setting up a tank, hope it all helps.

i know there are amazing things online but i'm a broke college student! and i'm not handy with building things at all, or i deff. would.
i'm excited to pick more things up while i read on this forum, i've learned a lot from my tarantula forum.. i used to keep all my T's in expensive glass cages and now they're all in rubbermaid tubs!

    Re: New

Welcome to BPNet Edie. It's wonderful to see pet owners/hobbyists that use forums this way. Since you're already aware of the benefits of keeping your T's in rubbermaid, you've likely already read here that a lot of us keep our bp's in Rubbermaid, Sterlite or Iris brand tubs....it's a great way to set up a BP, especially a nervous baby and very cost effective for you. There's a ton of threads about setting up tubs for babies but if you need any help, just ask.

Best single piece of advice I was given when it comes to new snakes...set them up and leave them be for a week...no handling, no attempts to feed, just basic cage maintenance. It's one of the hardest things to do but it does allow these naturally shy snakes to settle in at their own pace and starts things off on the right foot.

    Re: New

i understand about being a broke college student... for i am one. but what i have learned is it is alot cheaper to get stuff online. for example, a zoomed UTH costs almost $20 at a pet store. online i can get a 20-30 gal UTH for $10, or by getting flexwat wired you can buy by the foot (about $3-4 a foot) and then wire it. for hides you can buy an $6-8 log or cave hide at a pet store, online plastic hides from $2-5 depending on size. check out reptilesupply.com thats where i make a lot of purchases. another this i do is vist the dollar stores. a large water bowl...$1, humid hide...$1, fake plants... $1 ect. i would just be cautious about buying from a specialized pet store cause prices get marked up a bit. let me know if you would like somemore examples for i have shoped around alot. and i am sure others will have good ideas aw well.

by the way, that girl is a looker!!!!
