Smile Second Clutch ... sort of

Well we have our second clutch. It turned out to be 1 good egg and 2 slugs ... . I am happy that we got something. This female was bred to Blaze, our pastel male. Crossing my fingers for a Pastel female hatchling!!!!

This does bring up a couple of questions that I hope some more experieced breeders can answer.

    1. This was the first female that I felt follicles in (very early November), and I am pretty sure I had felt at least 5. So is it possible for some to develop, and others to re-absorb?

    2. Blaze did not start locking with this female until about 2 months ago, and I had assumed we had missed the timing and she was not going to lay. Is it possible that the timing being so late is what caused only 3 eggs to grow?

Anyway Blaze has been breeding with another female that has started to grow huge, and is bowl wrapping like crazy. So hopefully we will have a chance at more pastels.

Oh yeah, the one good egg was 102 grams, the whole clutch was only 175 grams.

Nice big viable egg. Good luck with it. Sorry to hear you didn't get 3 good ones. Good luck with that last female.

Thanks for the comments guys, I appreciated the good wishes.

Its been driving me nuts all day how she only had 3 eggs. She topped out at 1760 grams in January, so I wish I could figure what happened. I guess mother nature happened, and I am really happy that we got one good egg. I think we will have to keep whatever hatches out of that one .

Re: Second Clutch ... sort of

There are a lot of reasons why some follicles can be reabsorbed and others hang around ... My guess would be body fat ... I'm hitting the forums real quick tonight in between projects, but if you want to give me a call during the week and brain storm a little about the clutch I'll be around.

There's a female pastel in there ... I can feel it!

Re: Second Clutch ... sort of

    Grats Neil.
I'm with Adam. I don't have much time to post either, as it's late for me. However, with the shape of those eggs, I would say she may have had to much body fat (i.e. the elongated eggs). I talked to Adam about this about six weeks ago, and it seems that if they don't have the room, they won't develop the eggs properly, maybe the reason for the elongated eggs. Hoping for a lone female Pastel though. Good Luck from the Dirty South.

Thanks guys. And adam, your phone will be ringing . It took a lot of self control to keep from bugging you over the weekend. I figured you are so busy right now you don't even know if its day or night.
