Never used it but wouldn't it have the same isues as, say, gravel?

The liquid part of the urates would just end up pooling under it and be very hard to clean up.

Or would it be absorbed by the clay? Gut feeling says it doesn't sound all that good an idea for the reasons the others have mentioned.

I would also be more worried about impaction than with a bio-degradeable substrate if he accidently swallowed it.
