    found cornsnake, just few questions

i found a good breeder up in michigan to get my corn snake from, and he was telling me all the different morphs and stuff, and i really like this one called a ghost. he is going to meet me half way, so we don't have to ship the snake and skip all that stress. before i get him i want to make sure i have things set up. i have a 12 qt tub, with 2 hides, and a water dish. i was wondering for substrate do you think i should go with aspen, so the lil guy can burrow, or with newspaper for ease of cleaning? and as for the hides, do they have to fit tight like bp hides? for heat im just using a heat pad on a rheostat untill i buy a thermostat. since the tub is small i hope that will create a gradiant.

one last thing the corn i am going to get is a ghost, does any one have one of these, i would love to see some first hand photos.

From what I've experienced, they don't need their hides as tight as BP hides but it shouldn't be huge compared to the snake. They'll fit in the tiniest spaces. Aspen or newspaper should work for you, and just make sure the warm end is about 83-85ºF and the cool end doesn't drop below 70ºF or so. Also, make sure your tub is escape proof!

I'll second that escape proof thing...corns are the worst for getting out of the tiniest spaces. We have a milksnake and use aspen with her. I believe they are similar to corns in that they enjoy the ability to burrow a bit. Our milksnake even creates snake holes to enter her hides from underneath and rarely uses the "doorway" we created for her into her hides.

Corns do love to burrow. Even if you use newspaper, they will get under the paper. I have mine on 'Bed a Beast'. Its like soil, and Zim LOVES it. She burrows all the time. One day I came home to find her head on one side of the cage, and her tail on the other, with no body. Her entire body was under the soil. It was quite funny to look at and I wish I had gotten a picture. Corns don't really need tight hides. Mine does fine with the ones she has. She does tend to favor the smallest of the three though. She's almost too big for it. I don't have a ghost, but I've seen pictures. They are very pretty. My next corn morph is likely to be an okeetee.

Remember that adult corns won't keep their hatchling colors. Make sure you look at adult ghost' to make sure you like what it will turn into.

My 2 newest corns are a pair of 06 Silver Queen Ghosts

hopefully they will look like this one as adults

They're basically a specifric line of selectively bred ghosts, so look a little different than the standard ghost.

Re: found cornsnake, just few questions

well, I have a ghost corn. he is 7 years old, so here is an idea of what an adult will look like. Just a note though, ghost corns tend to be highly variable in their color. some, like mine, get lots of yellow along the sides of their body, while others only get a small about on the sides of their face and throat and perhaps under the chin. Some, like mine have coppery colored saddles, some are lighter. Hope this helps you though. enjoy.
