No worries; it's all good, Ben. I'm sure since this is online, that's how my explanation was understood.

I wasn't trying to detract at all from the seriousness and the root cause probably being husbandry related--not at all! But the extent of the wound and exposure of live tissue would indicate that making the snake comfortable (as much as possible) and minimizing the chance of (increased?) infection is the primary concern, until Crispy can get the snake to a vet.

Yes, injury like this would indicate that some form of husbandry modification should be practiced, and I'm sure Crispy will delve into it and change things, but for right now, getting the snake to a vet, and keeping the wound clean and dry is more important.

It's been a long day studying for "Great Diseases of the World" and "Gross Anatomy" finals and right about now I'm in the detective "why" mode rather than "first course of action from here on" which is what this problem REALLY needs right now. lol.

It's cool. I was an Animal Science major taking pre-vet courses--- after having grown up on a dairy farm doing 4-H for nine and FFA for five years. I bred and raised horse, holsteins, yorkshires, helped a friend care for and show goats.


I COMPLETELY understand. It's been MANY years, but I STILL remember studying my notes for my animal genetics and repro of domestic animals classes' final exams!!!

I wasn't able to complete my degree, so I feed the love of the career by having a menagerie of pets and being my veterinarian's worst nightmare of a client (b/c of the questions I ask!) hee hee hee

........ I'm not looking forward to genetics. the only kind of generics i'm interested in is bp morphs, lol. I seem to have made it as difficult as possible to get into vet school for myself. #1 I'm a guy. 72% of vet students are female. #2 I'm in the Corps at A&M which is often considered more rigorous than west point. #3 i grew up within city limits in houston. #4 need 3.65 GPR while taking 16-17 hours a semester... etc etc. however I'm determined to get there. lol. Planning on specializing in Equine Sports Medicine.

Ahhhhhhh yes...those were the days!!!!! Yep, yep....I remember well the classes starting at 0730 and running every hour until 1730, and then the recitations, labs and trying to find time to study for the 4:1 classes.

Hmmmmm...things have sure changed! Even when < I > was studying vet med, the % of females weren't that high...and 30-35 years ago, women were still a miniscule percentage of the vet med student population.

Well, at A&M you are not required to sign a contract to serve, however you don't get paid by the goverment unless you contract. So basically I'm doing the ROTC program solely for the leadership experience. However if at anytime I change my mind I can sign a contract and become a second leuitenant in the armed forces. Pretty much I just do ALOT of pt (physical training), wear a uniform to class, and learn military, army, and airforce customs.

OSU?!?! hissss.... (sorry, Aggie tradition). Things have changed ALOT, more women have moved into medical fields in recent years than expected. However, most surgeon positions are held by men. No, it's not a superiority complex, it's just that generally women tend to want more control of their hours so they can also have a family.

I hope to stay in Tx... However the part of Tx I WANT to live in is incredibly expensive (hill country outside College Station and Austin). Most likely I'll end up moving to Kentucky for a few years to work for my great uncle who works with horses that make it into the Kentucky Derby occasionally. If all goes well I'll move back to Tx once I get experience and have some very solid connections.

I wanted to do large and small animals, so I turned the prof.'s offer down.

Lol... my bad. Make a similar mistake whenever my Kentucky cousins say U.T. of COURSE they mean tennesse, when you know, I'm thinkin University of Texas (or properly known as t.u. )

Absolutely nothing wrong with the little piggies... however not exactly what I'd want to hang my career on... I completely understand your decision. I can understand kicking yourself in the butt over the degree, however at the same time you already have most of what I desire in life. Own land, few horses, snakes, significant other and child. I'm sure there's something in particular you have in mind that you need that degree for though and it sucks to have your future limited by your past actions. Any thought on going back to school for it?

Nope, no S.O. That's something that needs to be remedied, but I don't know how right now. I don't get to date or go out with friends, working the nights I do and caring for FD, Robin the other nights.

I have thought about going back, many times. But it's been 20 years and most of my classes would have to be taken again. (I don't think the grandfather clause lasts that long.....Sort of like the statute of limitations on some crimes! )

In fact, Dr. F, my vet, keeps asking when I'm going back, and saying that
when it comes time for the internship, I'd have a place in his clinic. He does companion animals and exotics, no farm animals. He keeps asking me "WHEN?!?"

Not at this point in time. I JUST bought the house and land, and am working full-time. Unless I find a very rich man, or win the lottery (yeah, riiiiiiiiight! ) I can't financially afford to quit work and go to school. Since they changed my shift schedule, instead of it being every other Monday and every Friday that would be the you-know-what's to work nights and be in classes all DAY, now it would be every other Wed, every H, AAAND every F. NOT GONNA HAPPEN!

But that's not to say I don't support or encourage others.
