One more shot at breeding?

My last female rattie popped today and it was a disaster. Out of like 8 babies, only 3 are still alive and only 1 looks like it may make it. This was her 2nd litter and she is only about 7 months old. Would you retire her(feeder status since shes a meany) or would you give her 1 more shot?

Important question #1 - How was her first litter?
Important question #2 - Can you come to some sort of conclusion of why this litter went to to gutter?

Personally, and depending on how you answer, I would probably just retire her. Why put her through the trouble? Why waste your time and mess up your whole breeding schedule with another bad litter? Not having enough of that perfect size rattie b/c of a bad litter really stinks. Just my opinion.

Shes a good mommy for sure. Last time she was the foster mom for some of her sister's babies(Her sister prolapsed after having 16 babies) as well as her 13 of her own. She is a really good mommy usually. This is just horrible. My last female that popped a couple days ago only dropped 3 and now this.... Gotta find some new breeding stock sooner or later

What are you feeding your mothers? Are you separating them into their own maternity tanks? Are you allowing them to rest between litters? If so, how long? Are you weighing your moms before putting them with the male? How much do they weigh?

She was 700 grams after she popped. Only 3 babies still alive now.
I have the 2 moms in a tub together since they are sisters and have been together since birth. They eat lab black of some sort, not sure on the name now. I think I'll give her 1 more shot now before I retire her either way. Good or bad litter she'll retire now

Why don't you try Becky's rat mix? That's what I offer all of mine, and I get 13-15 pups per litter, every time - very rarely do I have casualties, and I also separate the mothers into their own maternity tanks.


They all get at least 2 weeks rest after all their babies are gone before they are introduced to the male.
