Many people have constructed cages out of wood, but I would recommend sealing it with polyurethane or other similar waterproof coating. The problem with untreated wood is that it will absorb urine, feces and other bodily fluids that can harbor bacteria.

Another option that many people use is Melamine. It's pretty durable and easy to clean, but it's quite a bit heavier than regular plywood.
