    Mouse Smell

I feed in my tub and it hasn't caused a problem....yet. My snake seems stressed lately, and I am wondering if it is because of a lingering mouse smell in the room. When I put my hand in the tub to change the water or clean something, I get the feeling she is thinking I am a mouse. Even if I go to pick her up, she is real defensive. I have been moving very slowly around her, and never go toward her head. I know the bite wont hurt, but why would she be doing this. Could the mouse smell in the room, even if it isn't very strong, be getting her into her feeding response? My temps are 92-82, humidity is 50-60. I have a thermostat and all temps are taken using digital thermometers with the probes taped to the bottom inside over the flexwatt. Any opinions will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Kyle.

    Re: Mouse Smell

While I don't think that it's the best thing in the world to do, I know a lot of people that house rodents and snakes in the same room. I don't think that it is the problem.

More than likely, your snake is just being a defensive paranoid creature just like nature intended .... I would try a smaller hide and maybe even some loosely crumpled newspaper in the enclosure to add to the snakes feeling of security ... the less "out in the open" you can make them feel, the calmer they will become ... and then over time, they settle down and build some confidence and that stuff isn't even needed.

    Hope this helps.

I'm down south and I do the same works for me too.

I doubt, I would agree with Adam it is likely a security issue.

Right now my I have couple of rodents in the same room as snake rack and I have no issue at all.

    Re: Mouse Smell

Remember too this is a snake so it's just flat out going to act like a snake. Which means sometimes it will be a lazy ball of python, other times it will suddenly decide to hit you like a scaly freight train or hiss like the devil. There may be no other reason that it's just being a snake and right at that moment in it's life it cannot be bothered with you. All you can really do is provide the best possible enclosure conditions, feed it appropriately, treat it firmly, gently and respectively and don't be surprised when your snake acts like a snake. I'm sure you'll both do fine.

We do MANY things differently up here. In fact, its snowing as I type this. 2 days ago it was in the 80's. I have to get out of this state.

Does hissing back at them work? Mine hasn't hissed yet, but he is being an ornery little bugger. Ill just leave him alone until next feeding. If he wants his space, hes got it. Thanks for the help.

I house rats and snakes in the same room, but the minute I bring mice or rabbits/guinea pigs(for the boa) into the room, everyone is lurking from their hides.

And 95/84.5 are the temps I use for mine. Nice and cozy!
