My Rant
So here is what happened, I went to my local reptile shop to get a rat, as always I can't just go get a rat with out looking at everything. I was by the big snake area, and noticed a red tail boa soaking in its water. As I looked closer i noticed an injury behind his head. As I looked closer I notice this injury extended down most of his back. Curious I asked the guy what happened. He sai he didnt know how it happened. He told me that they found the snake this morning in front of the store. No one knew how long it had been out there. they said it was freezing when they pulled it out of the plastic tub. It has been around 50 degrees in the morning here lately. WHY THE HELL DO PEOPLE BUY THESE BEAUTIFUL CREATURES IF THEY ARE NOT WILLING TO DO WHAT IS NEEDED FOR THE ANIMALS CARE?!?!?!?! IF YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO TAKE IT TO THE VET, OR GIVE THE ANIMAL PROPER HUSBANDRY THEN DONT GET THE ANIMAL AT ALL. It really pisses me off when people wont take responsibility for the living things they chose to look after. sorry for the rant.

Welcome to our world.. This is the biggest problem facing true herpers today.
Pet shops should have signs in the reptile area. "YES IT NEEDS FOOD, YES IT NEEDS WATER, YES IT MIGHT GET BIG, YES IT CAN BITE, NO YOUR THREE YEAR OLD DOESN'T NEED A RETIC OR BURM."

Re: My Rant
I know what you mean, but I suppose it could have been worse. The people could have let it go in a park to die a slow death or to be killed by ignorant people.
How is the pet store? Usually we hear horror stories about pet stores that abuse their animals, but it sounds like that one might be okay. Are they going to get the snake treated for its injuries, or just put it up for sale?

Re: My Rant
So sad.... if you frequent that place often, you might want to speak to the manager and suggest that they have their vet ready to treat an RI... they might be focusing on the injury, and what is probably going to be a very bad Respiratory Infection is most likely around the corner due to the low temps...........

Re: My Rant
Good news, the injury is looking good. As good as can be expected. They said their vet looked at him and cleared him for RI. They dont know if they will sell him or not. First they want him heal up a bit. I asked if i could buy him a rat and feed him, he took it emmediatly. I'm currently giving my mom a guilt complex trying to get her to allow me to bring him home. He may not be the best looking red tail out there but he doesnt deserve the treatment he got. He needs a good home to look after him........ like mine.
P.S. the reptile shop he is at is very nice place. cages always clean. They are also very knowledgeable.

I'm out of reps for the day, but good on you trying to rescue this snake and give him the care he hasn't had so far... I'm also glad for you that there is a pet store out there that is knowledgeable and TAKES ITS REPTILES TO THE VET! Man... the one I worked out called the freezer the snake vet...

Re: My Rant
Hope this snake does well. Some pet stores (especially good private ones) do a lot of unofficial rescue. Sure they may eventually selling the unwanted pets dumped off to them but it's pretty cool that they even bother with fixing them up enough to sell them and recoup a bit of the money they put out. Back in Michigan we had a favorite pet store that was always getting snakes, lizards, etc. dumped in their laps (no reptile rescue that far north). Both Brannagh and Orlah, our two biggest females, came from them and were unwanted pet snakes.
