    rex!

I recently added a rex stud to my breeding operation.. bred to a red-eyed, normal coated himalayan girl, here's what came out! I am keeping this boy for sure!! Check out that curly coat..

(Are rexes known for having smaller litters? This female usually has larger litters but now there were only three..) Also, the litter had two normal-coated black females; are they het for rex?

    Re: rex!

No, rex is co dominant so the "hets" are the ones that have curly hair. Homozygous rex or double rex are almost hairless. You shouldn't have any of those unless you breed 2 rexes together.

You can breed any single rex to any normal coat rat and get 1/2 rexes.

I have a hairless male that I am hoping is a double rex so I can breed him soon and get some rex coats in my rat lines.

    Thanks!
Also, I am glad you cleared that up for me, Flagg. I am not completely sure that I want to bred for hairlessness.. I like the looks of the hets though (curly whiskers!? Who ever thought of such a cute thing?

    Re: rex!

Dang that's cute! I'm dying to get rexs, dumbo ears, blues...anything like that in my rat colony but Toledo continues to be the center for boring rats. I swear the pet stores here think a black hooded rat is the height of "different"....geeze!
