Basically, someone finds one in the wild that looks out of the ordinary. Then they breed it to normals. If there are more, usually we assume it is a DOm/Co DOm trait. If there are no more of it, you breed to offspring in hopes of it being recesive. Then, if it is recessive, some inbreeding usually is dne because, to our knowledge at least, the gene only is present in that one "family".
