In addition to the meal size being on the large side, I'm wondering if you're "cooking" the mice, instead of just thawing them and warming them up. Once they're unthawed and room temp, "hot, hot" water for 30mins might be cooking the rat--you want it thawed and warm, but not cooked. Maybe try smaller prey size, then thawing at room temp, THEN the blowdry to the outside to warm it up, and skip the 20-30min of hot water...and see if that helps?
