    BP Housing?

I have heard several options to housing a BP. From carpet to moss to newspaper. I want to get opinions from actual petowners. if you would post you kind of BP and its housing from size of snake to size of tank with hides water dishes and bedding. Also I have a thermometer in my tank to gage the temp but is there something to put in the tank to gage the humidity. Also suggestions are welcome to make my tank better. Here is what I got. And how I maintain it.

    10 gallon tank
    reptile carpet
    flower pot hide
water dish big enough for snake to soak in
cut out small log 2 halves.
branch for her to climb on.
I mist once every other day
    change carpet when messy

    Re: BP Housing?

    Hi Josh,

It looks like you have a pretty decent setup. As far as size, a lot of it depends on personal preference and your individual snake. The rule of thumb is one square foot of cage space per foot of snake. A 10 gallon tank should last about 6-8 months.

The flower pot hide sounds nice, but Balls don't seem to care for the half logs. They seem to prefer something that only has one opening and can feel the sides of the hide all around them. Usually a smaller hide is better than a larger one. Even a plastic bowl with a hole cut in the side can make a nice hide.

I'm not sure what kind of thermometer you have, but a nice inexpensive one that many people use on this site is an Accurite digital thermometer/hydrometer from Walmart. It has a probe so you can measure the temps from two locations (warm and cools side) as well as the humdity.

One problem that many people have with glass tanks is that they can be a little difficult to get the temps right as well as the humidity. You might try covering most of the top with aluminum foil and a towel in order to maintain the right environment a little easier.

Also, a bowl large enough to soak in isn't necessary for a Ball Python, but it will probably help with the humidity.

Here's a link to our care sheet for more info.

Here's a nice article on a glass tank setup.
