Sterilising?

Just recieved some sphagnum moss to help with humidity and was wondering whats the best way clean it before use? It arrived wet so i asume its freshly picked/harvested. thanx

I've never had to sterilize moss. I would think you could bake it a bit, at a very low temperature (200 degrees) for an hour. That should kill anything in the moss, but I'd keep an eye on it - while it's in the oven.

I've never heard of anyone sterilizing moss. I know with wood and mulch people bake it for 40-60 minutes. Temp around 200-250 does good.

Sorry, hon. I have some Sphagnum moss--but it was vaccum-packed (in a block, so I had to soak it to get it to 'expand'). I knew that stuff was okay to use right out of the package...not sure what to tell you about fresh stuff. I know some people on here bake their wood bedding before using it--to get rid of buggies... But I don't know if you can do that to moss.
